Gravic, Inc., developers of the data replication product line Shadowbase, have announced an availability modernization success story for the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). Gravic is converting an active/passive - uni-directional DR replication environment into active/active Shadowbase-based bi-directional continuous availability environment.

RBC currently operates the largest Canadian ATM/POS network. It is divided to five BASE24 processing regions. The bank was looking to modernize its active/passive DR architecture in order to be able to take advantage of concurrent processing. The selected the Shadowbase replication solution as the replication architecture to meet the active/active requirement. The network can now split the processing of the regions across the systems - two regions in one of the data centers and three regions in the other data center, maintaining a single database. This availability modernization project enables the IT infrastructure to run at its full capacity.
RBC was the first financial institution in Canada which integrated systems that enable clients to use a single logon when accessing their checking, investment, mortgage, and line of credit accounts. The RBC Financial Group boasts about 2.3 million online customers. Its total customer base is 12 million.
