ABBYY has announced Mobile OCR Engine 3.0 - a software development kit which gives developers tools for creating mobile and other compact applications with optical character recognition (OCR) and business card recognition (BCR) capabilities.

ABBYY’s technology converts digital camera-captured images of text and documents into editable and searchable text. BCR functionality allows the creation of mobile applications which transfer data from images of business cards to the mobile phone address book. OCR and BCR can be embedded into camera-based devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras, communicators, and portable scanners.
Mobile OCR Engine 3.0 supports multiple mobile platforms including Windows Mobile, Symbian, LINUX, as well as Android-based applications.
“We have been observing an increasing interest in Android among device manufacturers, and we anticipate growing demand for sophisticated mobile OCR applications for this innovative platform,” said Katya Solntseva, director of mobile products department at ABBYY. “Our Mobile OCR Engine is a powerful development kit that allows developers to create a wide range of smart, easy-to-integrate mobile applications, from simple end user programs to complex business solutions.”
ABBYY Mobile OCR Engine 3.0 is designed to minimize the use of hardware resources. The SDK uses algorithm for document analysis to provide faster and more accurate OCR processing, and capabilities for reproducing the structure of the original text including columns and paragraphs. The SDK recognizes 58 languages and provides dictionaries created for BCR in 16 languages.
