Nuance has introduced its free Nuance PDF Reader, which is small, secure, and connects desktop PDF with PDF-to-MS Office conversion services. The new product enables PDF form save, annotations and MS SharePoint features. PDF is an official ISO specification which allows Nuance to develop solutions with features not tied to Adobe technology. The Nuance PDF Reader is compatible with Adobe Reader, but it does not feature Adobe extras. The solution is 18MB to download and provides the ability to convert PDF files which are viewed in the reader into formatted MS Office XML documents. Another feature is the built-in SharePoint Connector which enables users to open and save PDF documents into MS SharePoint repositories.
“The Nuance PDF Reader provides a simple, but elegant, approach for converting PDFs to Microsoft Office documents, bringing cloud-based PDF conversion capabilities to the masses,” said Michael Orasin, research manager with International Data Corp. (IDC). “For organizations that use Microsoft Office and Windows 7, the software can deliver a big productivity boost by making it easier to work with and share PDF-based content across an organization.”
PDF files viewed within the application can be encrypted and then sent to the Nuance PDF Document Conversion Service. There users may select a format and return the Microsoft Office document as an email attachment.  Nuance PDF Reader allows users to prevent JavaScript installation to create a safer PDF environment. “Nuance PDF Converter Professional has become the number one alternative to Adobe Acrobat because it delivers all the rich features users need in PDF, and implements useful features not available from alternatives,” said Robert Weideman, general manager and senior vice president of the Nuance Document Imaging Division. “Nuance is proud to be the first to deliver a free PDF reader that connects to cloud-based productivity software, in a reader that is smaller, safer and feature rich.”
