ABBYY FineReader can process a wide variety of multilingual documents with high accuracy while preserving the document layout at the same time.

The program can recognize documents that contain any language combination – including European, Cyrillic and Asian languages.

If you would like to get the best possible results when performing optical character recognition on multilingual documents, check out these tips.

  • ABBYY FineReader can perform automatic language detection for the program’s supported European languages. If you would like to process a mixed language document containing Asian languages, start with disabling the automatic analysis and optical character recognition option.
  • From the Pages window select More languages... from the Document Languages list. Then from the Language Editor dialog box select Specify languages manually and select the appropriate languages.
  • Disable the Detect page orientation option before scanning or opening images. Use the dual page splitting option in case all page images are with the proper orientation. Those pages will be added to the current document after the execution of the command.
  • During scanning, the pages should be properly centered on the scanner. Make sure that the skew is not too large, or the text might be recognized incorrectly.
  • To manually draw areas on the image, you can use the tools under the Image window to properly adjust area shapes and borders.
  • If your document’s structure is simple, you may start automatic layout analysis. To do this, click Analyze or Ctrl+E on the toolbar of the Image window.
  • If the image contains areas with text in one language, select them and choose the language of the area on the Area Properties panel.
